Please note this update only affects those applicants in the trade occupations listed below.
The Department of Immigration and Citizenship has announced a change in policy that allows persons in the following occupations to obtain their relevant skills assessment from either Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) or VETASSESS:
· General Electrician + Supervisor
· Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic
· Motor Mechanic + Supervisor
· General Plumber + Supervisor
· Carpenter + Supervisor
· Joiner + Supervisor
· Bricklayer + Supervisor
· Cable Jointer
· Electrical Distribution Tradesperson + Supervisor
Previously, only persons usually resident in the prescribed countries of India, Sri Lanka, UK, South Africa and the Philippines could apply to VETASSESS for assessment of their trade skills. These applicants must continue to use VETASSESS for their skills assessment.
As mentioned above, applicants in the above-listed occupations from all other countries may now use either VETASSESS or the TRA for a skills assessment for the purposes of their General Skilled Migration application.
This change may offer further opportunities to applicants in the above-listed occupations who do not have formal training in their trade or were finding it difficult to meet the evidential requirements of the TRA. The VETASSESS process allows applicants to complete a practical test as a part of the process of skills recognition.
