Cairns residents were horrified when news of the violent assault spread.

Donations of money and services from concerned residents and businesses poured in for the victim, a 20 year-old German tourist.

Supt Carter said the community concern and spirit helped lead officers to the alleged attacker.

“Key information from the public gave us pieces of the puzzle that we didn’t have,” Supt Carter said. Police said the extraordinary level of public help, as well as the community’s support for the victim’s recovery, were the greatest the service had seen in recent years.
