Question 1: What is the meaning of this sentence:

"Check out that car, mate, it's fully sick!"

• How about some real Aussie slang, mate? :) Check out this sentence:

"He's got kangaroos loose in the top paddock."

That's sick. :D

No worries, mate, she'll be apples. :]

Dani-o

• It's funny, but hardly anybody says, "He's got kangaroos loose in the top paddock."

But it's common to say 'That's sick!".

I was trying to think of Aussie slang that gets used every day by a lot of people. So then it might be actually useful for visitors to Australia, or people who want to or are going to move there.

• Normally we say 'a ripper' instead of just 'ripper' :)

Examples:

- That joke was a ripper!

- He just did a ripper of a fart!

• But there are some exceptions - here's an old Australian TV ad for margarine. The woman in the ad is called 'Rita', and at the end all the kids say "Ripper, Rita!". It was filmed at Taronga Zoo in Sydney..:

Ripper, Rita!

There were some other ads with the same slogan.. in one of them it's a cockatoo (a real one) who says 'Ripper, Rita!' at the end.. :)

• Sorry I've got no idea. ?(
Where the bloody hell are the solutions?

Dill in Germany is a kind of vegetable,
Ripper has been the singer of JudasPriest,
Roos in the top paddock??? - Wohl nicht alle Tassen im Schrank?
Stuck right into him - Is that somthing indecent???
and what about the car? ?(

Fragen über Fragen...

I ain't no Aussie after all :(

Cheers,
Matte

• I spend most of my time teaching 'proper English' in class.

The subtitle for the 'English only' thread is:
'Small talk, questions and more....... and strine (slang) for beginners.'

So, I'm teaching some things about Australian slang to those who are interested, in a place designed for it. As you would know, most German people now spend years learning English in school. When a few of them who have a special interest in Australia want to know a bit more about Australian slang and its origins and use, I am happy to explain it to them.

Of special interest is the word Wowser - defined as being: 'one whose overdeveloped sense of morality drives them to deprive others of their pleasures..'

• Hi Matte,

I'm sorry.. :)

In English we also use the word 'Dill' for that herb. But in slang it is also used for a silly person.

'A ripper' is sometimes used for something that's great. For example, 'That joke was a ripper!' (That joke was great!)

'Roos loose in the top paddock' - your guess was right :)

'Stuck right into him' basically means to criticise or fight enthusiastically, for example in an argument or in sport. It is also sometimes used in a different way: 'He got stuck right into his dinner.' It just means that he ate his dinner very enthusiastically.

'Sick' is used by a lot of young people. But it doesn't mean 'Krank', it means 'Toll!'

Cheers,

• Thanks for the translation,

And sorry, I didn't expect Daniel to be a vegetable neither a silly person.
Ripper that's clear (Der Witz/Furz war ein Abräumer) =)

Are there lots of wowsers down under? Why do you mention this word as interesting?

And is there an expression for Blokes like me ? who can't properly speak australian, and have never been successfully riding on a 1. Quarterhorse, 2.Bull, 3.Surfboard X(

Cheers,
Matte
