Wikipedia promoting Nazi symbols: German politician

A left-wing German politician has filed charges against online encyclopaedia Wikipedia for promoting the use of Nazi symbols in Germany.

Katina Schubert, a deputy leader of the Left party, said she had filed the charge with Berlin police on the grounds that Wikipedia's German language site contained too much Nazi symbolism, particularly in an article on the Hitler Youth movement.

"The extent and frequency of the symbols on it goes beyond what is needed for documentation and political education, in my view," she told Reuters.

"This isn't about restricting freedom of opinion, it's about examining what the limits are."

Ms Schubert said she had taken legal advice before making her move, and that she hoped it would encourage public debate on how far internet platforms should be allowed to aid proponents of extremist, anti-semitic and racist ideologies.

"There are signs neo-Nazis are trying to take advantage of such structures, and this needs to be stopped in good time," Ms Schubert said.

"Especially given that Wikipedia is too important to jeopardise as an open and self-regulating project."

A spokesman for Wikimedia Deutschland, an organisation that promotes the internet encyclopedia in Germany, rejected the charge.

"We don't really know what Ms Schubert's problem is," Arne Klempert, managing director of Wikimedia Deutschland, told Reuters.

"What's important is the context the symbols are used in, and here it's quite clearly education and documentation.

"Anyone who tries to prevent the Nazi period being documented properly has a strange understanding of the world, in my view, because that's the best weapon there is (to prevent) something like that from happening again."

die meisten hier in diesem Forum leben noch in Deutschland - und bekommen die Nachrichten - und Tagespresse-Meldungen also viel früher mit als die Australier (sofern diese nicht fast druckfrisch die Online-Presse lesen).

Muss hier wirklich jede Meldung kommentiert werden? Und wenn du schon über Deutschland diskutieren willst, dann tu es auf deutsch! Oder poste es im "english only" - Thema.

Was uns vielmehr interessiert, sind Meldungen aus Australien. Also her damit...

Greenhouse targets "irresponsible": Rudd

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says it would be irresponsible to commit to a greenhouse target at this stage of UN climate change talks.

Mr Rudd today described as horse-trading the process in Bali in which the Australian delegation has voiced support for a 2020 target for cutting emissions in the range of 25 to 40 per cent.

He insisted he would not set a 2020 target until next year, when a report by economist Ross Garnaut into emissions trading and the impact of interim targets will be submitted.

The Bali conference is seeking to establish a road map for two years of talks towards a post-Kyoto greenhouse treaty.

“It will be a negotiation and negotiations involve horse-trading. People here know a bit about what horse-trading means,” Mr Rudd told reporters in Roma, Queensland.

“It means that you sit down with other governments and work out what’s necessary for the planet, what’s necessary for everyone to contribute, including Australia.

“Therefore, frankly, it would be irresponsible from that point of view to go out there and put a number on the table straight away.”

Mr Rudd also said he had outlined to Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao this week his intentions of playing a leadership role in climate talks.

“In my discussions with the Chinese prime minister in the last few days, and with others, I’ve indicated that we’ll be doing whatever we can to try and bridge the gap between developed and developing countries.”

United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change executive secretary Yvo de Boer said despite what had been said in Bali, Australia had not formally committed to a 2020 goal.

“I haven’t heard if they are willing to do that, but I have heard Prime Minister Rudd say that he wants ambitious targets for Australia ... in the future period,” he told reporters in Bali.

Mr de Boer said Australia would not be too late, as legally binding targets would come at the end of the two-year negotiating period.

“Otherwise, it’s a bit like going on a shopping trip and not knowing how much money you have got in your pocket.”

Environmental group WWF said Australia had sent an early positive signal to the Bali conference by ratifying the Kyoto Protocol but Mr Rudd had clouded his government’s stance.

“Australia needs to make up its mind,” WWF Global Climate Change Program director Hans Verolme said.

“We got a very good signal in the ratification ... but what is really going on? What we need is a real clarification of its (targeted) level of emissions.”

A European Commission official insisted Australia’s representatives in Bali had been concrete about the 25-40 per cent target.

“I’m not confused because I heard them saying very loudly, very clearly in one of the meetings ... they referred to 25 to 40 per cent,” EC Environment Directorate-General head of unit Artur Runge-Metzger said.

The federal opposition says such a target would cause economic devastation to Australia.

“Mr Rudd is giving dual messages,” coalition climate change spokesman Greg Hunt said.

“On one hand, he tells the Australian people: ’I want massive cuts’ and the moment it’s pointed out this will have consequences for pensioners, for low income families, for farmers, he walks away from that,” Mr Hunt said.

The Climate Institute says the 25-40 per cent target is only a potential average for developed countries and not a range of possible targets for individual nations.

Meanwhile, a new international report has ranked Australia third last on a list of how much or how little 56 countries have done to protect the climate.

Environmental group Germanwatch took aim at Australia’s “very poor” performance in its latest Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI), released today.

Australia slipped to 54th position from 47th last year - and ranked higher only than the US and Saudi Arabia.

Hallo, Fernweh !

Ich dachte eigentlich, dass es vielleicht manche von euch interessiert, was wir hier in Australien so von Deutschland hören, und eigentlich dachte ich, dass wir in Australien euch zeitmässig voraus sind ;)...es ist meist nicht viel, und wenn, dann eben nur so Horrormeldungen ! Da wollte ich euch eigentlich damit klar machen ! Andersherum war es ja auch nicht anders...so wie Gitte auch schreibt, in Deutschland hat man meist eben auch nur die Horrormeldungen von Australien gehört !
Die Meldungen, die ich von Australien schicken kann, sind aber nun leider mal in Englisch...andererseits möchte ich es auch nicht im English only Forum posten, da ich doch ganz gerne auf Deutsch darüber diskutieren würde ! Mein Englisch ist nicht schlecht, ich verstehe aber mehr, wie ich sagen kann !

Und viele hier können vielleicht besser deutsch als englisch (ist nunmal so, wenn deutsch die Muttersprache ist und man sich in einem deutschen Forum tummelt) - wenn du als drüber diskutieren willst (vermutlich in deutsch), dann solltest du vielleicht in deutsch die Artikel übermitteln.

Ansonsten finde ich, haben englische Artikel eben wirklich was im "englisch only" zu suchen, denn dafür gibts dieses Unter-Forum doch - oder etwa nicht?
