Skills Authority Updates July 2008 2/07/2008
Announcement regarding proposed new TRA Migration Assessment Policy
Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) has now announced the proposed skill pathways for international applicants seeking recognition of their skills for migration purposes.
The proposed new approach will be substantially different to previous pathways but offers good opportunities for prospective migrants seeking to apply for migration on the basis of their trade skills.
The proposal provides for applicants to apply on the basis of either:
formal vocational training, or formal skills recognition through workplace assessment or recognised industrial or occupational licence, or
a combination of employment and formal vocational training
It is proposed that under the new system, qualifications will include licensing, industry certificates, recognition of prior learning (RPL) and gap training. Independent verification to the Australian equivalency standards will apply.
It is expected that the new policy will come into effect on 1 September 2008 but this is subject to confirmation. Further information will be made available as soon as announced by the TRA.
The Australian Medical Council (AMC) has made changes to the Skilled Pathways for Medical Practitioners
International medical graduates who wish to practise medicine in Australia must complete the assessment process in one of the four following pathways set by the AMC:
· Competent authority pathway
· Standard Pathway (workplace assessment) under development

· Specialist assessment (full comparability / Area of Need)
The Standard Pathway for workplace based assessment is currently under review and will replace the workplace based assessment of doctors applying in Non-Specialist Area of Need positions. Full details have yet to be announced the pathway will consist of an MCQ Examination, Pre-Structured Clinical Interview, and Workplace Based Assessment before the AMC Certificate will be issued.
