Ever thought about native planting in your garden?
Ever thought about the matter native vs. introduced flora in Australia?
A few months ago we met a Canadian guy at a friend's house in Berlin and tried to describe to him the sorroundings of the house we live in the Adelaide Hills. John said: "All is covered in native shrubs and trees." The Canadian wanted us to explain what we mean by the term 'native trees' - he thought they would be some special trees for Aboriginal people funny.
So it became clear to me that this kind of people I meet quite often in Australia
-the ones who you chat to on a walk in the national park and suddenly they bend down to pull out a little green sapling - "A WEED!"
-or the ones who hate cats so much cause they chase the native lizards to death
are a distinctive Australian kind of people.
And some of them put an incredible amount of work, time and money into the total rearrangement of the their gardens to create a 100% native habitat.
I am still pondering if I shall start the fight against a certain weed on our home grounds.
