ZitatDARWIN changed forever on Christmas Eve, 1974.
The laid-back tropical city with a population of about 48,000 had seen its fair share of adversity, most notably the Japanese World War II bombing in 1942. But for the best part of three decades, Darwin had been a place where the happy-go-lucky roamed free.
That all changed when Tracy arrived. By the time the sun had come up on Christmas Day, 80 per cent of Darwin's buildings had been flattened.
The official death toll was 71, but many who lived through Tracy suspect the real figure may have been much higher. Thousands of residents were injured and more than 41,000 were left homeless. The damage was so severe, some suggested moving the entire city.
