Hallo zusammen!
Thank you for your email.
The RTA defines people from overseas who do not intend taking up
residence in NSW and do not hold a permanent visa under the
Commonwealth Migration Act 1958 (or are from New Zealand and are not
taking up residence in NSW), as visiting drivers. Examples of
visiting drivers can include:
-- tourists
-- business people on limited-duration assignments
-- people visiting friends or relatives
-- visitors on working holiday visas
-- people studying or working temporarily in NSW
-- overseas Defence Force exchange personnel and their families.
People who fall within the category of a 'visiting driver' are not
required to get a NSW licence even if their stay is longer than three
months. As a visiting driver they must hold a current overseas driver
licence. If the licence is not written in English, an International
Driving Permit or an English translation from the Community Relations
Commission (details below) must also be carried with the licence when
driving. The visitor status must remain unchanged, the overseas
licence holder must not be disqualified from driving in NSW or
elsewhere and must not have had their licence suspended or cancelled
or visiting driver privileges withdrawn.
A visiting driver must be able to satisfy the NSW Police Service of
their genuine visitor status in the case of any enquiry. Visas,
letters from employers or educational institutions, statements from
consulates or diplomatic offices may be used to establish visitor
status.
Visiting drivers who hold a current overseas learner driver licence
can continue to learn to drive in NSW. They must, however, comply
with all Australian Road Rules adopted in NSW, the relevant NSW
driver licensing rules for learner licence holders together with any
relevant restrictions endorsed on their overseas learner licences.
The NSW learner driver licensing rules include the display of L
plates, be accompanied by an unrestricted Australian licence holder
and a maximum speed of 80kmh.
